Spotlight on: Out of Sync
Hello! We hope you are doing great! Today we want to introduce you to three amazing women: Jackie, Kate and Meg, who together decided to turn their shared passion into a prospering family business.
How to enter the fashion industry? Read their story, told to us by Meg, and discover what has been the main motivation of the founders of Out of Sync!
Please tell us a bit about who you are and what you do.
Out of Sync is a luxury womenswear brand from Wales. With myself, Meg, my sister Kate and my mum Jackie, we create limited edition collections with investment pieces designed to express individuality. The collections are consciously crafted and ethically made in the UK using sustainable and end of roll fabrics. Our artistic vision is to assure you stand Out of Sync.
How and when did you get started?
Kate and myself attended University and then worked in the fashion industry for a few years. Mum has always made clothes and helped with alterations for family and friends. So we decided as a family that we had all the components to combine our skills and start our own brand. We launched our first collection in 2019, mainly selling to family and friends through our website and also doing market stall events. In July 2020 we were approached by Angela Quaintrell a brand consultant who owns AQ Market, she saw potential in our brand and she has worked with us to elevate the brand for the luxury market. We are currently part of her London showroom.
What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced so far?
Being selective about our fabrics is a huge challenge for us!
Obviously this last year has been a challenge for everyone. For us, at the beginning of 2020 we had plans to take part in Cardiff and Wales fashion week but both were cancelled and due to lockdowns buyers have not been able to attend the showroom. In business though it is important to stay positive, and we have used the time wisely, reflected and strengthened our business foundations.
What has been your most satisfying moment so far?
When Angela Quaintrell approached us it was a huge boost to our confidence and having someone with Angela’s experience and support has been invaluable. Since we’ve been at AQ market we have been supported and inspired by some amazing and incredible designers who are also exhibiting in the showroom. So we are very proud to be part of this family.
Would you recommend entrepreneurship to others?
Yes I would, but you do need to have a good work ethic and be self motivated. It helps to be creative and have a positive mindset. But there is great satisfaction in even the smallest achievements and having control over your own business is very rewarding.
What was your motivation to become an entrepreneur?
Working together as a family was our initial motivation, especially after myself and Kate worked in a cycle of unpaid internships within the industry. Entrepreneurship for us is about creating something that is an improvement on what was there before, therefore creating a brand where ethical practices are of utmost importance was a priority. There are also many improvements and sustainable initiatives that need to be addressed in the fashion industry and our ambition is to be part of this positive change.
What drives you? What motivates you?
Each of us loves the whole design and creative process and being able to curate a collection is exciting. We are never short of ideas and wanting to express them artistically is a big driving force for us.
We are also passionate about producing high quality fashion and promoting a slow fashion movement because we understand the amount of work and craftsmanship that goes into every garment. Our motivation is wanting to bring value and thoughtfulness back into the clothes we wear. Where the creator and the consumer benefit.
